First Camp Tournament Now Official
Ever since the UOC began months before the release of UFC Undisputed 2009, camps have constantly argued about who really is the best. Now it is time for every team to back up the talk as the UOC staff has officially announced an eight team tournament to determine the best camp in the UOC. Camps being represented in this tournament are Jackson's MMA, Legend MMA, Team Gauntlet, Team Affliction, Team Conquest, Team Leu-Jitsu, Swollen Knuckles Fight Club, and Team Punishment. Notable camps such as Chute Boxe, the oldest running camp in the UOC, and Lions Den were left off the eight team bracket.
The tournament consists of a best three out of five match format with each weight class being represented by one fighter. The early favorite for this figures to be Team Gauntlet which boasts two champions, M1ke0707 (LHW) and Skarface66 (MW), and two top contenders, Lynch96 (WW) and Bucket (LW). They face a stiff first round test though in possibly the second best team coming in, Team Affliction. Affliction will be represented by a top five fighter in each weight class, something no other camp, including Gauntlet, can say.
A first round matchup between Conquest and Leu-Jitsu is a battle of two potential sleeper teams. Conquest has been a team in turmoil the past couple of weeks with a number of their top fighters leaving the camp for personal reasons. There was even early talk of them dropping from the tournament. With them staying in though, they're dangerous. Undefeated Light Heavyweight contender Waytoospicy and Lightweight Champion TapouT figure to give them a great 1-2 punch, but finding that necessary third win could hurt them. If they do find that third and fourth fighter though, they could easily reach the finals. "We have been having a real tough time but we will bounce back. Our lineup is lookin pretty good and I believe we have a few surprises for other teams," said the leader of Team Conquest, TapouT. As for their opponent, Leu-Jitsu, they are arguably the most quiet team in this. Eventhough they are quiet, they are headed by two very strong competitors in Middleweight top contender Dleu and Welterwight contender DJ Burris. This could be a battle which comes down to the least talked about fighters in both camps, the Heavyweights.
Jackson's MMA vs. Legend MMA builds up to be an showdown of two very strong teams. Both are considered top five camps but are facing off in the first round. A notable match between top five middleweights x King v2 (JMMA) and Rumple-Stilt-Skin (LMMA) could not only be the most interesting match, but possibly decide who moves on to round number two. Also, former Light Heavyweight top contender TheStunna101 is making his return at UOC 14 for LMMA and is expected to immediatedly contribute. Though the Light Heavyweight for Jackson's has yet to be officially announced, any match with Stunna involved should be a great one.
By far the least talked about matchup thus far is Team Punishment facing off against Swollen Knuckles Fight Club. Swollen Knuckles, a late replacement into the tournament, seems to be the heavy favorites after a strong showing in UOC 13. CWood7 heads this team as not only the camp leader, but also the undefeated Welterweight Champion. Their opponents, Team Punishment, figures to bring in a nothing to lose mentality. Darrenh84, currently the number three ranked heavyweight, seems to be their only true established fighter. Is this because of a lack of talent, or just a mere lack of notoriety? One team should make a strong name for themselves early in this first round battle.
The first ever UOC Camp Tournament is shaping up to be a very exciting event. Could a Cinderella team emerge in the tournament? Will a traditional power such as Gauntlet continue their dominance? Will this event live up to it's already huge hype? These questions and many more should be answered in the upcoming weeks as the bracket plays itself out.
